Guidelines on entering Hungary

ANNOUNCEMENT / last updated: 11th of January 2022 /

You can still enter Hungary for study purpose with a valid residence permit or Visa. 

You may need to self-quarantine at your chosen residence for 10 days. The quarantine might be shortened if you do 2 negative COVID-19 PCR tests after entering the country.

PLEASE READ OUR GUIDE ABOUT THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE UPON ENTERING

IMPORTANT: If you are a freshman or an upper-semester student the address of your testing will be indicated on your Certificate, which is issued by the International Admissions Office of Budapest Metropolitan University. You must present this Certificate when you enter Hungary.

If you are already a student of METU, and have your residence permit,please don’t forget to attach the following documents to your police registration:

  • Residence permit
  • Travel documents which grant permission to enter Hungary
  • Student status verification form (Please contact SIC: https://www.metubudapest.hu/ask-sic for this document)
  • Health Insurance contract
  • Dormitory/rental contract (Please contact dormitory/housing landlord for this document- in case of dormitory accommodation, you can also contact: FEM_E_DORMITORY@metropolitan.hu)
  • Flight ticket


If you are a freshman of METU and you have a student visa, please don’t forget to attach the following documents to your police registration:

  • Travel documents which grant permission to enter Hungary
  • Student visa page from your passport
  • Final Acceptance Letter (Hungarian version)
  • Health Insurance contract 
  • Dormitory/rental contract (you receive the dormitory contract upon paying the first month of the dormitory fee, in case you have any questions please contact us: FEM_E_DORMITORY@metropolitan.hu)
  • Flight ticket
  • Please also contact our International Admissions Office (international@metropolitan.hu) a few days before your arrival to Hungary, as we need to issue a certificate that you need to print and bring with you to enter the country

After submitting the Police Registration Form, you should receive an official Decision within a few days. This Decision should be printed and taken with you when you travel to Hungary.

REGARDING THE COMPULSORY QUARANTINE

It is possible that the authorities will order you to go to compulsory self-quarantine upon entering Hungary. The quarantine might be shortened if you do 2 negative COVID-19 PCR tests after entering the country.

The address of your testing is indicated on your Certificate, which will be issued by the International Admissions Office of Budapest Metropolitan University. You must present this Certificate when you enter Hungary.

IMPORTANT: After leaving the airport, please go straight to the place of quarantine that you indicated on your documents, as the police will most likely visit you to make sure you quarantine. 

Exceptions:

For students arriving from the countries listed below: the first PCR test might be performed in the below countries, however the second one must be done already in Hungary:

  1. Member States of the European Union or European Union candidate countries,
  2. Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD),
  3. Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO),
  4. Russian Federation,
  5. People's Republic of China,
  6. United Arab Emirates,
  7. Kingdom of Bahrain,
  8. Member States of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States: Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Turkey, Republic of Uzbekistan
  9. A country specified in a decree of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in agreement with the Minister of Public Security.


Traveling with Immunity Certificate

Any person may travel to Hungary without restrictions, regardless of citizenship: who, upon entry into Hungary, credibly certifies that they had COVID-19 disease within 6 months prior to applying to cross the border; 

  • who, upon crossing the border, certifies his protection against the coronavirus by presenting an official certificate issued in accordance with Government Decree 60/2021 (II. 12.) on certifying immunity to coronavirus. 

  • who certifies their protection against the coronavirus by presenting an official certificate issued by a country listed in Government Decree 7/2021 (IV. 29.) KKM on determining the mutual acceptance of certificates of immunity.

  • who certifies his protection against the coronavirus by presenting an official certificate issued by a country listed in Government Decree 17/2021 (V. 22.) on the unilateral recognition of immunity certificates.

For EU citizens:

EU Digital COVID Certificate: the bilingual, digital or printed Covid-certificate issued on request by a member state of the European Union is valid in every country of EU and is directly accepted in Hungary as well. Types: vaccination certificate, recovery certificate, negative test certificate:
