Experienced fresh graduate – METU student becomes employee after traineeship at the Hype and Hyper magazine
Angéla Kauffman, our Craftsman Artist BA student started working as a trainee at the Hype and Hyper magazin next to her studies. Today, she is working as an editor at the company.
We asked Angéla to share her story, how she discovered the opportunity and how she can utilize the things she learned at Budapest Metropolitan University at work.
How did you discover the traineeship opportunity?
One of the fashion design teachers of METU sent us an email about the trainee position saying that it might be a good opportunity for those looking to gain experience in writing.
I remember that it indeed seemed very relevant to me. At the time I was thinking a lot about immersing myself into a more theory-focused field next to my practice-oriented classes.
What kind of responsibilities did you have as a trainee?
I was writing two articles a week and I had to take over some editorial tasks as well, for example the handling of the editorial interface. I was also doing research.
Did you use any of the knowledge, experience you gained at METU in your work?
Yes, very much so. We started receiving more complex design tasks during our second year. We had to start these projects with researching the chosen topic, working out the directions and thoughts, on which we spent quite some time on. I was always interested in this aspect of planning, and I enjoyed it very much. Positive feedback from our teachers was especially important to me. This might sound obvious, but there really were some conversations that I still clearly remember until today. These meant a lot to me, and I needed them a lot at the time.
What advice would you give to students, how should they look for trainee positions?
Keep an eye on the opportunities communicated by METU. If you feel like a position would fit you well, don’t be afraid to apply even if it is not exactly in line with your studies.
I think the most difficult part is the application itself. A year ago, I was so nervous I would spend hours over a single e-mail - and today, it’s an everyday part of my work.
What are your longer-term plans, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I can imagine many different paths. I am in this position today because I was able to let myself think outside the box, not in terms of typical positions only. This gives you great freedom. I think a lot about how much I like where I am today, and how nice it would be if this feeling stayed with me until 5 years from now on. I would like to keep feeling this way, but I am open to and interested in anything where I can work with others in an open and honest way, and where I can in any way react to current art.
