Showroom Tunisia 19.1 Contemporary Clothes Design Contest

This year, for the first time, the Tunisian National Tourism Office in Budapest and Budapest Metropolitan University organized the Showroom Tunisia 19.1 Contemporary Clothes Design Contest. The contemporary clothing design competition aimed to encourage the use of Tunisian traditional dress patterns, garments, accessories, raw materials, decorations, motifs, and techniques adapted to contemporary fashion.

As a first step in the competition, fashion designer Ben Gamra Sofien gave a lecture on traditional Tunisian attires to our Craftmanship BA students. Afterward, several presentations and workshops were held on the subject, and the presentation of the work stages and the pre-selection followed.

On Thursday, June 27, 2019, the mini-collections of the students of the METU Craftmanship BA were presented in the framework of a large-scale performance at the Goldberger Textile Museum.

Among the apparel and accessories appearing in the performance, the public was able to get to know the works best suited to the conditions of the tender. Students selected by the jury have received a Tunisian study trip to familiarize themselves with Tunisian handicrafts, traditional costumes and fashion.

In the clothing and accessory specialization, the work of Dóra Mya Katona won the first prize.  Mya found her central inspiration in studying traditional Tunisian costumes, which is in the duality of customized dress patterns and free drapery. In the form of experiments, she presented a lot of exciting opportunities, in which she reinterpreted the original Tunisian materials. The classic line-up has been brought into line with contemporary silhouettes, forming a diverse and individually formulated, reinterpreted costume, representing a dynamic and feminine style. The use of materials also promotes femininity and classicism, the combination of subtle lights, gold, and vivid colors evokes eastern culture, followed by patterns and lengths of current trends.

Nikoletta Bugyik won the first prize among the jewelry and accessories specialization students, who designed the necklaces that were inspired by Tunisian embroidery. These works can be worn as separate jewelry and as part of more complex attires as well. With the use of materials and technological solutions, Nikoletta created real a contemporary set of jewelry that can be matched to traditional trends.

Congratulations to the winners!

Other METU participants included in the competition: Ácsbog Cintia, Huang Wenqing, Kaszás Nikolett, Poláková Réka, Ságodi Nelli, Tar Etelka, Tóth Vanda, Farkas Katalin, Horváth Kriszta, Zakariás Veronika

Leaders: Zsuzsanna Aranyosi DLA textile artist, Katalin Jermakov, goldsmith

This cooperation provided the students with the outstanding experience to study a culture with a long and rich history. It was especially important that thanks to the Tunisian National Tourist Office the students have been able to work with original Tunisian raw materials for clothing and jewelry. The personal approach, the authentic information, and the presentation of a Tunisian applied artist have all contributed to the success of the contest.
