The topic of my thesis is the situation of the vision and hearing impaired, examined via products designed specifically for them. First, I provide a general introduction to the main branches of 21st century product design which are related to this area, along with some illustrative examples. Then I summarize the history and evolution of products designed for this group, listing products from our current times. The history of development is provided chronologically for each product and using a thematic approach from the 20th century.
After collecting the objects which are designed to complement the senses of the vision and hearing impaired and help them in their everyday life, I introduce some games and learning opportunities which target people living with disabilities. My conclusion is that these possibilities are quite rare and inadequate.
Concluding the theoretic part of my thesis I move on to examining the position of the disabled in Hungary using statistical data as well as studying the general support and opinions of society. To get an idea of the latter I conducted a brief research project, which I also summarize in my paper.
As the closing part of my thesis I chose a project which investigates vision and hearing impairment via an event built on my theoretical research. The goal of the event is to introduce technological innovations and encourage integration and mutual understanding between participants.
