Dezső Szabó (1967) is a fine artist, and from 1990-97 he studied painting at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. After his initial monochrome painting work, his interest turned to photographic capturing. In his early works, he captured scenes from aerial and natural disasters (Black box, 1999), various natural phenomena (Turnwind, 2001), mysterious locations (Location, 2000), deep-sea footage. He mostly prepared props of television stills, which then he captured with his camera. The final point of this era was the self-destructive logic of the theme and prop in his Time Bomb series (2008). By recreating views and pictures, he focused on the mechanism of pictures, then from 2015 he extended his interest to the examination of the nature of analogue photographic pictures.
Dezső Szabó's works have been exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions, and his latest solo exhibition was held at the Hungarian Museum of Photography in 2018 under the title “Dark Chamber”. His works can be found, among others, in the Hungarian National Gallery (Budapest), the Ludwig Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art (Budapest), the Institute of Contemporary Art (Dunaújváros), the Paks Gallery (Paks), the Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History (Győr) and in the collections of the Hungarian Museum of Photography (Kecskemét). Recently Dezső Szabó's Darkroom album won a silver medal at the prestigious Tokyo International Photo Awards. Click here
